WHAT IS A MENTOR?
“A mentor is a technically skilled individual who guides Dojo attendees and facilitates their learning and project work during the sessions. Mentors usually have a preferred area of expertise within which they like to work (eg. HTML, Python etc.) and this can influence the topics covered in the Dojo.”
View this slideshow presentation here about being a mentor.
Will I have to lesson plan and teach by myself?
NO. You will coach individual and/or small groups of kids who may need help with independent self-guided projects. Your role is to guide and facilitate, to simply make things easier for our young computer programmers, our Coding Ninjas.
Do have to attend every CoderDojo meeting?
NO. Your level of commitment is up to you. If you can only commit to one Saturday a month, that is fine. We understand how full or lives can be. We hope that the volunteer experience will keep you coming back regularly.
WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER?
“A volunteer is an individual who helps with administration and related services. Parents of regular attendees and non-technical individuals who want to help out often work in Dojos. It is also not uncommon for volunteers to learn the basics of Scratch and be able to work with beginners as a mentor.”
What sorts of things will a volunteer be asked to do?
We may need help with installing our CodoDojoDurham banner, arranging tables and chairs, getting kids connected to wifi, parent/guardian sign-in, managing the beverage/snack table, etc.
